Gumbo A Go-Go

By Lori Hutzler Eckert

At the annual Great Southern Gumbo Cook-Off, no two gumbos are alike, but they all taste so good!

On Saturday, Jan. 13, several Emerald Coast restaurants will compete for the title of “Best Gumbo” at this 18th annual outdoor event, held at The Market Shops at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.

The winner is selected by a panel of regional judges; however, you can make pick your own favorite by sampling all the contender’s entries from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Chicken, sausage, seafood or a mix of all, these gumbos are some of the best the South has to offer.

The event also features door prizes, children’s activities and live Cajun music by Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band.

Tickets for the Great Southern Gumbo Cook-Off are $15; net proceeds benefit the United Way of Okaloosa and Walton counties, Covenant Hospice and Okaloosa-Walton Child Care Services. For more information, call (850) 267-8092 or visit sandestin.com.
