Worth His Weight

{mosimage}Randy Joyce believes in teaching by example. An eighth-grade educator at Richbourg Middle School in Crestview, he recently participated in Northrop Grumman’s “Weightless Flights of Discovery” professional development program for teachers at Cape Canaveral’s Kennedy Space Center.

Joyce, who was selected as one of 240 teachers from all 50 states for the innovative workshop, plans to take his firsthand knowledge into the classroom, where he teaches integrated science and aerospace physical science. The airborne educators conducted experiments involving parabolic arcs and tested lunar gravity, all while being filmed, so that they can share their experiences in the classroom.

An enthusiastic teacher, Joyce said that Northrop Grumman’s program is proof that “science is not always boring!”
Joyce said he was honored to be recommended for the program through the local Florida Space Research Institute office. He added that “this was an experience of a lifetime for me that can also create the drive for students to want an experience of a lifetime too.”
