Lugging around your laptop, stocking the diaper bag with snacks, stuffing your tote for a weekend getaway, or securing your everyday essentials in a trusted purse—from work to play and all that lies between, the receptacle we select to move our belongings matters.
We no longer have to choose between fashion and function in our bags; plenty of brands offer both. And no matter where you wear it, there are a few priorities you should seek in a bag.
Opt for durable, high-quality materials. Leather has withstood the test of time because it’s resilient, ages well, and is easy to clean. Leather or otherwise, examine the stitching, lining, and hardware for security.
There may be a time and a place for the “dump-everything-in” Mary Poppins bag, but most of us seek accessibility and organization. Check for internal and external pockets and ensure there are secure closures and easy-to-use zippers.
Whether over the shoulder, crossbody, or on the back, comfort is key. Adjustable and padded straps make for a bag you forget is there.
Where fashion is concerned, it may suit you best to shop for a size, shape, and color that is consistent with your closet.
We spoke with Tiffany Goodart, buyer of Sunset Shoes & Lifestyles, and Morgan Clements, retail manager at Parasol Alys Beach, about which bags are best for all the places you will go with the things you carry.
The Working Woman
While the traditional briefcase might be spotted here and there, business professionals have mostly turned to a structured tote or backpack.
