When Angela Pearson began working as a nurse practitioner in the field of dermatology in 2014, she knew she had found her calling.

“I have always, ever since I was very young, been interested in skin care, hair care and nails,” says Pearson, who earned her undergraduate degree in nursing from Northern Illinois University and a master’s in nursing from the University of Illinois Chicago. “I figured what better way to combine my love of skin, hair and nails with health care—and I will not do anything else.”

After moving to Florida in 2021, Pearson joined Dermatology Specialists and works out of the Watersound location. In addition to serving a full slate of patients with a range of conditions, she has extensive experience in cosmetic dermatology, providing fillers and the latest laser treatments.

“Lasers are my passion,” she says. “They are one of the few treatments that actually improve the health and quality of your skin. Fillers don’t do that.”

On a daily basis, Pearson uses three Sciton lasers to rejuvenate her patients’ skin.

“The first is HALO, a hybrid fractional laser,” she says. “It vaporizes the outer portion of the skin to reveal fresh, renewed skin.”

The second laser is called ProFractional.

“I like to use the analogy that it is aerating your lawn,” Pearson says. “It’s poking little holes in the skin, basically creating microchannels, and that is what promotes collagen production, which also helps improve fine lines, wrinkles, scarring, and sun damage.”

The third, Contour TRL, is a tunable resurfacing laser.

“Contour doesn’t aerate the lawn—it actually mows the grass,” she says. “It’s what we call a full-field ablative laser. It’s treating the entire outer layer of the skin.”

The Contour is especially helpful for patients with deep vertical lines around the mouth, and with the correct parameters, a single treatment can substantially minimize or eliminate those wrinkles, she adds.

“In an ideal patient, we might use all three,” Pearson says. “For example, we would do HALO on the neck and then ProFractional on the forehead, the cheeks, even the eyelids and the nose. And then we would do Contour in the perioral area.”

Her cosmetic patients are mostly women between 35 and 75 who want to have healthy skin, feel more confident, and age gracefully.

“Often, your skin is one of the first things that people notice about you,” she says. “Lasers help with the tone of your skin, hyperpigmentation, the appearance of pore size, fine lines, and there’s even some evidence that they may help prevent pre-cancers or even skin cancers from forming.”

Those benefits are why Pearson works to stay current on everything from technology parameters to aftercare procedures in the field of laser treatments.

“I will never stop attending conferences and talking to other providers about advancements in laser technology. It’s something I truly love,” she says.
