Coastal Skin Surgery and Dermatology talks neuromodulators

While you may not recognize the scientific term neuromodulator, you’re likely familiar with the marketing names of aesthetics over the past decade, such as Botox, Dysport and Xeomin.
Neuromodulators are wrinkle-relaxing injections. The scientific process includes the messenger cells affecting the transmission of signals between neurons, paralyzing the muscle and decreasing any movement that causes wrinkles.
Where Botox was the original brand and most recognized of neuromodulators, many options have since arisen on the dermatology scene. Dysport has increased in popularity because the results are noticed quicker and last longer. For those seeking more natural beauty products, Xeomin contains less preservatives.
Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are the three options available to Coastal Skin Surgery and Dermatology, but there are more options on the market.
“Each works to cease unwanted movement; they are just different brands marketed uniquely based on the formulations,” said Whitley Simpson, PA-C at Coastal Skin Surgery & Dermatology. “Each patient will have a different experience, and it might take trying the different brands to find the best results for you.”
Simpson assures that each is safe and effective and provides naturally enhanced looks when administered by a professional.
While much of the taboo and misconceptions about cosmetic procedures have been cleared up, Simpson makes each patient aware that using neuromodulators will not make them look fake or unnatural; rather, it brightens and firms skin.
“When the procedure is done correctly, an outsider can’t look at you and immediately tell,” said Simpson. “It doesn’t dramatically alter how you look; rather, it restores a younger version of yourself.”
On average, the results of neuromodulators can be noticed within four to seven days of the injection, with the full results presenting in two weeks. Results typically last for three to four months.
Simpson meets with each patient to determine how many units will be injected based on the results the patient hopes to see. After the consult, the procedure can often be administered the same day, taking five to 15 minutes.
The day before, patients should avoid alcohol and NSAIDS to decrease the risk of bruising. Afterwards, patients are advised not to work out or do anything strenuous for 24 hours. Patients should not lie down for four hours after and should avoid wearing hats or headbands that day.
Simpson also notes that neuromodulators are being effectively used for the treatment of TMJ, something that has been life-changing for many of her patients.
Fraxel skin resurfacing treatment is increasingly used for those who want to forgo needles and treat multiple skin concerns.
Fraxel is a non-ablative resurfacing laser that can treat multiple concerns, such as fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne scarring and sun damage and provide overall rejuvenation. Fraxel is also an FDA-approved preventative pre-cancer treatment.
Patients should avoid prolonged sun exposure up to two weeks before the treatment. After, peeling and pink skin are to be expected for about a week. Sun exposure and exfoliation should continue to be avoided.
For best results, most patients need multiple treatments spaced about a month apart. After the peeling is complete, the results are immediate.
“When making any aesthetic decision, we want you to feel welcomed, cared for and never rushed into a decision,” said Simpson. “At Coastal Skin Surgery & Dermatology, we wanted to educate you to make the best decisions for yourself aesthetics-wise so you can feel and look your best.”
